Houthis kidnap prominent Yemeni journalist

August 6, 2015 at 10:29 am

The Houthi militias in Yemen have kidnapped journalist Abdulkader Alguneid after breaking into his home on Wednesday afternoon. Being the most prominent media voice in Taiz, he used his platform selflessly to expose Houthi crimes.

His capture is believed to be a tactic to silence news about the crimes committed in Taiz and to scare journalists inside Yemen from reporting further Houthi crime-related news.

Alguneid tweeted that Houthis entered his house at 1:34pm (GMT); his son confirmed his kidnap on Facebook an hour later.

Journalists and human rights activists have launched a social media campaign in solidarity and to lobby human rights organisations to report the news of Alguneid’s kidnapping using the hashtag #FreeGuneid.
