Iraqi officials banned from travelling following corruption charges

August 12, 2015 at 10:57 am

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi yesterday prevented government officials accused of corruption from leaving the country.

The decision came hours after the Iraqi parliament voted in favour of an anti-corruption reforms package brought forward by Al-Abadi, Turkey’s Anadolu Agency reported.

In a statement, the prime minister said he had ordered the Integrity Commission to prepare a list of government officials accused of embezzling public funds “to prevent them from travelling and bring them to justice”.

A member of the Integrity Committee, Mohammad Kon said: “The decision to prevent the travel of officials suspected of financial and administrative corruption is an important step.”

Al-Abadi yesterday promised to proceed with the reforms even if they cost him his life.

According to Transparency International’s corruption index, Iraq is among the most corrupt countries in the world.
