US probes Daesh chemical weapons claims

August 14, 2015 at 10:00 am

A White House official has said the U.S. is monitoring reports that Daesh has used chemical weapons against Kurdish forces in Iraq.

The U.S. is currently investigating whether Daesh militants used mustard agent – a type of chemical weapon – in an attack on its Kurdish foes in Iraq, Deputy Spokesperson for the White House’s National Security Council, Alistair Baskey told Anadolu Agency on Thursday.

Baskey said the U.S. continued to take all allegations of chemical-weapons use very seriously, adding the U.S. was aware of the reports and was seeking additional information.

“We continue to monitor these reports closely,” he said. “And would further stress that any use of chemical or biological material as a weapon is completely inconsistent with international standards and norms regarding such capabilities.”
