Egyptian military court sentences 26 officers over coup attempt

August 17, 2015 at 1:03 pm

An Egyptian military court yesterday sentenced 26 officers, including four retired colonels and two Muslim Brotherhood (MB) leaders, with attempting to overthrow the government, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported.

The officers were charged with attempting to carry out a coup against the ruling regime and the dissemination of the MB’s ideology among the army.

The brother of one of the culprits said that they were surprised by the sentences. He added that the sentences were announced without a hearing being held and without the attendance of the judge.

Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported the man saying that families of the officers were waiting at the door of the court and were surprised with an officer told them to go to the Military Prosecution to find out the sentences. He told them that “the verdict was issued.”

The man said: “We gathered there [at the door of the officer of the Military Prosecution]. An officer got out holding a paper and called out the names and mentioned the sentences,” noting that the sentences ranged between 10 and 25 years.

A brother of another officer said the families are preparing to appeal.
