At least 82 people were killed in a Syrian regime attack on a popular market in the city of Doma, near Damascus, yesterday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

Director of the Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, told AFP: “The regime carried out four raids on a popular market in Doma town centre, killing 82 civilians and wounding more than 250 others.”

“The people gathered after the first strike and then the other strikes followed one after another,” explaining that many of those who were injured “are in a critical condition”.

Doma is located in the eastern Ghouta, the most prominent stronghold of the opposition fighters in the province of Damascus, which has been subject to the siege imposed by the regime forces for nearly two years

The raids coincided with the visit of Stephen O’Brien, director of the humanitarian operations in the United Nations, in an effort to improve the ability to deliver aid to country.

Doma and its surrounding have been constantly subjected to raids carried out by the regime’s forces. On 16 June, 24 people were killed by shelling and missiles which coincided with the visit of UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura to Damascus.
