Sudan protests the continued detention of its nationals in Egypt

Sudanese Ambassador in Cairo Abdel-Mahmoud Abdel-Halim protested against the Egyptian authorities’ continued detention of 44 of his country’s nationals in spite of a presidential decision to release them being issued days ago.

In a press statement, Abdel-Halim criticised the Egyptian authorities for not executing the decision which was issued by President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi for the release of the prisoners on 6 August, noting that 101 Egyptian detainees were released from a prison in Khartoum under the orders of President Omar Al-Bashir.

“When Bashir made a decision to release 101 Egyptians in Sudan, the implementation of the resolution took less than 24 hours, in contrast to what is happening in Cairo; as Al-Sisi’s decision has been issued for more than ten days now with no action has been taken so far,” he said.

“We are really frustrated at the non-implementation of President Al-Sisi’s decision; it has really raised tensions in Sudan with local media raising concerns and the families of detainees holding demonstrations.”

He said Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry explained that the “non-completion of the legal proceedings” is likely to be the cause for the delayed implementation of the presidential resolution.

The Sudanese detainees were arrested in Egypt on charges of entering the country illegally. Sudan released 101 Egyptian fishermen who were accused of breaching the country’s territorial.
