Erdogan says Turkey “heading rapidly” toward early elections

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that the country is heading rapidly toward early elections after the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has failed to form a working government.

“Because of the failure to form a government, we have to seek a solution with the will of the people… so we are heading rapidly toward an election again,” Erdogan told a gathering of local officials on Wednesday.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu formally ended attempts to form the next government on Tuesday after weeks of coalition talks failed. Davutoğlu had been trying to find a junior coalition partner since the AK Party lost its parliamentary majority in an election earlier in June.

Erdogan said the government was in real crisis facing a serious terrorism problem in addition to the developments on the border with Syria.

The president added that despite developments in the East and Southeast of the country over the past 13 years, including the abolition of state emergency, infrastructure projects, and the opening of schools and universities and TV stations in response to Kurdish campaigning, terrorist operations continue because the goal of such groups is “to divide Turkey”.

Erdogan stressed that only the “will of the people” can break the current political deadlock in the country.
