Muslim scholars criticise calls to topple Lebanese government

August 27, 2015 at 12:00 pm

The Association of Muslim Scholars in Lebanon said on Tuesday that calls to topple the government are a serious matter and are orchestrated by the Syrian and Iranian regimes to dominate the country. The group called for the demands of the Lebanese people to be respected, instead of exploited to make political gains.

The scholars’ body warned that the fragile political situation in Lebanon could collapse at any minute. It urged civil society to be more vigilant so as not to be held responsible for future developments.

The association issued its statement as members met in Beirut, where they elected Shaikh Ibrahim Beydoun as the new chairman, with Yahya Daouk as his deputy. Shaikh Mohamed Ahmed Hammoud is the new public relations officer, Shaikh Ihab Al-Banna is head of the media committee, and Shaikh Saad Iskandarani is the treasurer.
