Egyptian justice minister accused of corruption, stealing state land

Egyptian lawyer Ali Taha filed a complaint against the country’s Justice Minister Ahmed Al-Zind over allegations of corruption, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported yesterday.

The compliant included accusations of selling land owned by Judges’ Club to his wife’s relative for less than market value.

The complainant noted that he had previously submitted another complaint in the same issue and the Public Prosecution had started investigations into the claims.

According to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, the complainant said that the reports published by news outlets are considered proofs as no one objected to them. He said that Al-Zind did not object to these reports, therefore, “this is a crime of wasting public funds and acquiring illegal gains.”

The lawyer also said that officials in the ministry of agriculture were sacked and arrested over similar accusations, while accusations against Al-Zind lie hidden in drawers because of his power.

He added that Al-Zind gives generous grants to judges and lawyers, and he has changed all the members of the graft committee which was investigating the accusations. “All these measures make people cynical regarding the objectivity of the investigation,” Taha added.
