Iraqi forces thwarted Daesh attack near military base in Anbar

Iraqi security forces thwarted an attack against a military base near the western Anbar province, the Iraqi Media War Cell announced yesterday.

The cell said in a statement: “The leadership of Al-Jazeera and Al-Badiya operations, with support from the international coalition, managed to kill 15 Islamic State terrorists and destroy the booby-trapped truck they drove after following them into the Jawaanh area in Baghdadi district in Anbar.”

The bomber tried to enter the Ain Al-Assad Airbase in Al-Baghdadi district, the statement added.

The Ain Al-Assad Airbase is the largest military airbase in western Iraq which hosts US military advisers who plan – in coordination with Iraqi forces – the battles against the militant group.

Iraqi forces, backed by a broad international coalition, have been fighting to regain control of areas siezed by the Islamic State in the provinces of Saladin and Anbar.
