Egypt adjourns trial of 213 accused of links to terror group

An Egyptian court yesterday adjourned the trial of 213 defendants accused of being affiliation with Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis, which recently announced its affiliation to Daesh, the Anadolu Agency said.

A judicial source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Anadolu that the Cairo Criminal Court postponed the trial to 13 October for allow for further discussions with witnesses.

The suspects have been charged with murdering and the assassination of police officers, attempting to assassinate former interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim, establishing and joining a terrorist group and carrying out several bombs across the country.

The first hearing was held in March when the late Public Prosecutor Hisham Barakat transferred the case to court after finishing criminal investigations.

On 10 November 2014, Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis changed its name to Wilayat Sinai after announcing its affiliation to Daesh.
