Egyptian authorities deported 54 Sudanese nationals back to Sudan yesterday after they were arrested attempting to illegally immigrate to Italy via Egypt’s coast, a security source told Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity.

The group were boarding fishing boats off the coast of Kafr El-Sheikh, a governorate in the north.

The source said that following their arrest, contact was made with the Sudanese embassy in Egypt which issued travel documents so that they could be deported back to Khartoum, Sudan’s capital.

Earlier this month, the Egyptian naval forces thwarted the attempt of 228 individuals from various nationalities to reach Europe via Alexandria, a port city in the north of Egypt.
