Iraqi PM assassination attempts foiled

September 23, 2015 at 10:27 am

Information leaked by the US embassy in Baghdad has helped to foil two assassination attempts on Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi, a senior Iraqi official has revealed.

According to Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper, the unnamed official said that the first attempt was carried out by individuals close to the prime minister, while the second attempt took place near the Green Zone. Several Iraqi army officers were arrested in connection with the incidents, the source said.

Abadi revealed on Monday that some people close to him were turning against him after he launched his proposed reforms. These may, he claimed, cost him his life. Such protests, he added, are like a wake-up call to amend the country’s situation.

The Iraqi prime minister launched a package of reforms last month which received popular and parliamentary support inside and outside Iraq. However, they have met with some opposition.
