Syrian opposition condemns Russian bombing of historical sites

October 7, 2015 at 11:18 am

National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces yesterday condemned Russia’s targeting of historic and heritage sites in Idlib early this week, AlkhaleejOnline reported.

The coalition said that the sites are located in Serjila, Jabal Bab Al-Zawiyya and date back to the Syriac Era about 2,000 years ago.

In a statement, the coalition said: “The [Russian] airstrikes targeted empty sites and they were free of any Daesh or terrorist members.”

The coalition said that getting wiping out historical cultures and civilisations is what the Russian “occupation” is doing through its use of cluster and fissile bombs.

The coalition called on UNESCO and the other regional organisations to condemn the “aggression of the Russian occupation” and to move very urgently to document its crimes and protect the remaining sites.
