Egyptian court frees Beltagy’s wife

October 12, 2015 at 9:36 am

An Egyptian court freed Sana Abdul-Jawad, wife of Muslim Brotherhood Leader Mohamed Beltagy, a judicial source told the Anadolu Agency.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “The court ruled that the wife pay a fine of 200 Egyptian pounds ($25.55) instead of a jail term of six months over charges of assaulting prison guard.”

Osama Al-Helou, Abdul-Jawad’s lawyer, told Anadolu that she attended the hearing and paid the fine and the case has now been closed.

Beltagy’s wife and son were sentenced to six months each in March, on claims that they assaulted prison guards when they visited Beltagy in Tora Prison at the end of the last year. The defence committee appealed the ruling

In April, a court acquitted Beltagy’s son.

Abdul-Jawad was accused of insulting prison guards and carrying out verbal attacks against a state employee. She denied the claims and said that the whole case was false and it was manipulated after she was beaten and dragged to the ground by the prison guard and her headscarf was forcibly removed.

Beltagy was an Egyptian MP and is a senior leader of the Muslim Brotherhood. He is married with four sons and a daughter. His daughter was killed by Egyptian security during the bloody dispersal of the anti-military coup protests in August 2013.

To date, he has been sentenced to more than 100 years in prison on a number of charges by the Egyptian courts.
