Syrian opposition calls on US to support Free Syrian Army

October 30, 2015 at 11:14 am

The US is opposed to Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad playing any role in Syria’s future and he must step down to allow for a “workable transition process”, opposition groups said.

In information published on their website, the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces said US Special Envoy for Syria Michael Ratney met with the coalition’s Ambassador to Germany Bassam Abdullah and informed him of Washington’s stance.

“Abdullah reaffirms the Syrian Coalition’s rejection of giving any role for Al-Assad to play in the transitional period or Syria’s future even for a single day, adding that this position is a fundamental guarantee for the success of a constructive transition process,” the group published on etilaf.org.

It called on the US to allow the provision of support for the Free Syrian Army so as to enable it to confront both the “Russian-Iranian aggression” and Daesh simultaneously.

“Abdullah warns that amid political initiatives that are not based on a clear reference, the Assad regime is trying to gain more time in order to regain control of the areas it lost to rebel fighters,” the Syrian opposition coalition noted on its website.
