Iran has sentenced Washington Post journalist Jason Rezaian to an unspecified prison term following his conviction last month on charges that include espionage, a spokesman for the Iranian judiciary has revealed.
Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejehi announced the punishment in a statement quoted by Iranian state television on Sunday. “In brief, it is a prison sentence, but it is not finalised,” he said.
Rezaian has dual US-Iranian citizenship. He was detained in the summer of 2014 at his home in Tehran, where he worked as a reporter for the American newspaper for two years. His trial took place in four closed hearings at Tehran’s Revolutionary Court over the past few months.
