The cost of Germany’s participation in the war against Daesh in Syria next year is expected to cost €134 million, Germany’s ARD news reported yesterday.

German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen told reporters yesterday: “The fight against Daesh must be at all levels, military and economic in order to drain its resources.”

In an interview with Germany’s Bild am Sonntag newspaper on Sunday, General Volker Wieker revealed that Berlin will send at least 1,200 troops to Syria.

Wieker said that while the “final decision” on the number of soldiers to be included in the mandate had not yet been made, “from a military point of view… about 1,200 servicemen and women will be necessary for the operation of the aircraft and ships.”

He also explained that Germany was planning to send four to six reconnaissance planes adding that Berlin is holding meetings with officials in Turkey and Jordan to place the airplanes in Turkey’s Incirlik military base and in the Jordanian capital of Amman.

Germany announced earlier that it will send a Tornado aircraft as well as a frigate and a refuelling aircraft from its naval forces to support France in its fight against Daesh in Syria.
