The Tunisian security services dismantled as many as 1,000 terrorist cells in 2015, an official at the Ministry of Interior said yesterday.

Ministry spokesman Walid Louguini said the terrorist cells included recruitment cells, online propaganda cells as well as cells responsible for assisting recruits to travel to areas of tension and armed conflicts.

In an interview with Shems FM, he revealed that more than 500 Tunisian fighters have returned from conflict areas in the Middle East and Libya.

“Ninety-four of them have been placed under house arrest because of the danger they pose to public safety, while several others have been referred to the judiciary and others were put under surveillance,” he said.

Tunisia suffered from three major terrorist attacks in 2015; the latest was in the capital Tunis which targeted a security personnel bus.

Louguini explained that the security services have arrested 75 active members of terrorist cells in the period between 29 November and 5 December.
