Merkel refuses calls to increase German military support to fight Daesh

December 15, 2015 at 10:58 am

German Chancellor Angela Merkel rejected on Sunday an American request to increase Berlin’s military support in the war against Daesh, Der Spiegel newspaper reported.

The newspaper reported Merkel saying: “I think that Germany is doing its role and there is no need to speak more about this issue now.”

Der Spiegel reported that on Saturday US Secretary of Defence Ashton Carter had sent a letter to Germany asking for more military support in the war on Daesh. The letter came after the German parliament had agreed for the country’s forces to joining the fight against Daesh.

Merkel added that her country’s support has achieved “success”, noting that German forces could train Kurdish soldiers who contributed to regaining parts of their cities allowing refugees to return to their homes.

The German contribution to the anti-Daesh coalition includes six drones, a frigate to guard the French jet carrier, refuelling aircrafts and around 1,200 soldiers.

Germany joined the coalition after a French call of solidarity against Daesh in the wake of last month’s Paris attacks which claimed the lives of 130 people.
