Qatari Ambassador and head of the Committee to Reconstruct Gaza, Mohammed Al-Emadi said yesterday that the first phase of the Sheikh Hamad residential project in Khan Younis has been completed and that he will deliver the new apartments to their residents.

The Palestinian Minister of Public Works and Housing in Hamas, Mufeed Al-Hasina said in a statement earlier in December that 860 beneficiaries will benefit from the first stage of the Sheikh Hamad City, they were selected through an electronic draw.

The residential project consists of three phases; the first phase includes 1,060 residential units.

Qatar pledged $407 million for the reconstruction of Gaza including the construction of 2,500 apartments in October 2012, during the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani’s visit to the enclave.

Al-Emadi said Qatar is continuing its efforts to solve Gaza’s electricity crisis in collaboration with the International Quartet Committee including the extending of a gas pipeline from Israel to the enclave’s power plant.

Qatar is also in discussions about ending the decade-long siege on the Strip by opening the Rafah Crossing.
