Tunisia’s ruling Nidaa Tounes party on Saturday held its first general conference following the resignation of the party’s Secretary-General Mohsen Marzouk and several MPs.

The conference which concluded yesterday witnessed the election of a steering committee which will oversee the party’s affairs until the general elections due in the end of July.

Writer and political analyst, Nasr Al-Din Bin Hadid told Quds Press: “Holding the conference with the presence of the party’s honorary president, President Beji Caid Essebsi, and leader of the Ennahda movement, Sheikh Rashid Ghannouchi, has put an end to a long debate among the party members and supported the constituent body, led by the president’s son, Hafez Beji Caid Essebsi”.

“The group led by Hafez Beji Caid Essebsi and its new relationship with the Ennahda party has won over its opponents led by the outgoing Secretary-General Mohsen Marzouk,” Bin Hadid said.

Remarking on the new party to be announced by Marzouk, Bin Hadid said he believes the new party will not have any significant impact on the mother party and that its role would be limited to enriching the political scene in Tunisia.
