MUSCAT, Oman (AA) – Ten Yemenis freed from the Guantanamo Bay detention camp arrived in Oman on Thursday, the Omani foreign ministry said in a statement.

Oman’s official news agency reported that the move came in response to a request by the U.S. government.

The news agency said the former prisoners will stay in Oman for humanitarian reasons until they can go back to Yemen, which is currently facing major instability.

U.S. President Barack Obama had promised to close Guantanamo during his 2008 presidential campaign and his administration has since managed to release a significant number of detainees from the infamous prison.
