A German military delegation and Kurdish military officials yesterday participated in laying the foundation for a military training centre near Erbil, Iraq, to train Peshmerga forces, Turkey’s Anadolu Agency reported.

The ceremony was attended by deputy head of Kurdistan’s Ministry of Peshmerga and a senior leader in the Iraqi Kurdish armed forces, Anwar Haji Othman, and the base’s Commander Karzan Shaqlawi.

Speaking to Anadolu, Shaqlawi said the base, which is being established 15 kilometres north of Erbil, will be used to train Peshmerga forces.

The commander explained that Germany will sponsor the military base which is estimated to cost $3 million and that Berlin has already sent weapons to the Peshmerga forces and training experts as part of the fight against terrorism.

Shaqlawi noted that the base will be established within six months, pointing out that it will include three sections, the first will be used for training operations, while the second and third will repair armoured vehicles and weapons.

As many as 12 countries of the international coalition to fight terrorism have established military bases in Kurdistan to train Peshmerga forces, after Daesh seized the city of Mosul and other areas in Iraq.
