Abbasi said the celebrations program includes an exhibition and a documentary about the Union’s history organised in the Habib Bourguiba Avenue in Tunis, a gathering of local and international unionist to be organised in the Conference Palace in Tunis, as well as scientific seminars and musical performances.

Tunisia’s news agency quoted the Assistant Secretary-General of UGTT, Buali Mbarki as saying that that “this year will be the year to continue the Union’s mission to serve the people’s interest and maintain Tunisia’s stability and protect the democratic path”.

Mbarki explained that the Union’s priority is to stabilise the country.

The President of the Wafa Movement, Abderraouf Ayadi said in remarks to Quds Press that he fears that UGTT which represents the left will be a tool to overthrow the current government, targeting the participation of the Islamists in power.

UGTT has been the only trade union organisation in Tunisia since independence despite attempts to establish other organisations.
