January 22, 2016 at 10:00 am

Tunisia’s General Labour Union (UGTT) will call for a national dialogue to design a road map to resolve the country’s economic and social problems, UGTT’s Secretary-General Hussain Abbasi has said.

“The Union will call for a national dialogue that includes the political parties, social and economic organisations, the unemployed federation and representatives of the young protesters to discuss solutions for our social problems,” Abbasi said.

Tunisia’s Shems FM reported that Abbasi said the dialogue will lead to the issuing of an economic document which lays out practical actions to deal with the issues.

Abbasi stressed that “the dialogue must not exceed a month”.

“The people have the right to protest and demand their rights but with the preservation of state institutions because if the country entered into a state of chaos, the solutions will be difficult and challenging,” he said.

Abbasi said the Union should be consulted about major problems to help provide solutions.

Hundreds of unemployed university graduates protested on Wednesday to demand jobs.
