Ghannouchi urges Egyptians to engage in dialogue, not conflict

The leader of Tunisia’s Ennahda movement Rashid Ghannouchi has said that he “still has hope” that the “Egyptian elite will engage in dialogue rather than denial and conflict”.

In exclusive remarks to Quds Press, Ghannouchi called on Egyptians not to waste time on battles that will not lead to victory for any side. He said: “All Egyptians are the children of one country; no one is capable of removing the other, not the army, the [Muslim] Brotherhood, or the liberals. All of them are the children of an ancient country for which we still hope for the good.”

He added that he expects the government to take the initiative and reach out for dialogue.

Ghannouchi said: “No one is able to exclude the other, so why waste blood and money? The army, the [Muslim] Brotherhood, liberals and Copts will remain, so why are weapons not put aside and [why don’t] people engage in dialogue to reach consensus?”

Egypt marked the fifth anniversary of the Egyptian revolution on Monday, which toppled former President Hosni Mubarak, amid tight security.
