Tunisia reduces curfew

January 26, 2016 at 2:50 pm

Tunisian authorities yesterday eased night time curfews which were setup on Friday after protests demanding jobs led to violence.

In a statement, the Ministry of Interior said: “Based on the relative improvement in the security situation, it was decided to reduce the duration of the curfew as from today, 25 January 2016, in the whole territory of the Republic to start from 10 o’clock at night until 5am.”

The curfew had been applied across the country from 8pm to 5am due to the attacks on public and private property nationwide which “posed a danger to the homeland and its citizens,” the ministry explained.

Protesters killed a policeman in the area of Feriana in the Kasserine region.

Tensions have risen in the Kasserine region since 17 January when a young man was electrocuted after scaling a transmission tower to protest his rejection for a government job. Protests spread to several cities, including the capital, Tunis.

Unemployment is around 15 per cent in Tunisia, but is far higher outside of the capital.
