Iran’s Guardian Council yesterday rejected an appeal filed by Hassan Khomeini, grandson of the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, against his expulsion from elections for the Assembly of Experts.

“Based on news we have received, Sayyad Hassan Khomeini’s qualification for candidacy for the Assembly of Experts has once again not been approved by the Guardian Council,” Khomeini said.

The Guardian Council said in a statement on 26 January that it had accepted 166 requests to run for the Assembly of Experts and rejected 207 requests, noting that the results could be challenged in the period between 28 and 30 of the month.

“It’s a surprise to me and to many others that some of the honourable gentlemen in the Guardian Council couldn’t establish I am qualified,” Khomeini said last month.

The Assembly of Experts elections are expected to take place on 26 February.

Iran’s Supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, supported the Guardian Council’s decision which was criticised by President Hassan Rouhani.
