There is a marked increase in the number of women who travel to Iraq and Syria to join Daesh, Italy’s intelligence service revealed in its annual report.

According to the report submitted to the parliament on Wednesday, there is a significant increase in the number of whole families who make the trip and young women “who are usually assigned to household or management tasks”.

According to the report, there is a growing number of European women travelling to Iraq and Syria to join the group.

“Most female jihadists are the brides of foreign fighters, who they have often met on the internet and travel to wed in the war zones of Iraq and Syria,” it said.

“Some of the women proselytise, recruit, provide logistical and operational support for Daesh and other jihadist groups as well,” it added.
