21 Egyptian opposition members sentenced to 2 years

An Egyptian court yesterday sentenced 21 opposition members to two years in jail each on charges of gathering and demonstrating on the fifth anniversary of the January 25 Revolution.

A judicial source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Anadolu Agency that the “Misdemeanour Court of Al-Mataria sentenced 21 defendants to two years in prison, as they were accused of demonstrating and mass protesting on the fifth anniversary of the revolution of 25 January.”

The defendants denied the charges which included murder, attempted murder and damaging public and private property and facilities.

The ruling is subject to appeal.
