Former official: Egypt is ‘in crisis’, early elections needed

March 9, 2016 at 10:24 am

Egypt is “in crisis”, Arabi21 reported the former aide of the Egyptian Foreign Minister for Legal and International Conventions Abdullah Al-Ash’al as saying yesterday as he called for early elections.

Al-Ash’al called for authorities to “be clear” with the Egyptian people because ignoring the situation would cause “many losses” and would put authorities in a situation where they could never defend themselves.

“I support carrying out early elections, releasing all prisoners and affording safety and security for all citizens,” he said.

Egypt is being run with a “stupid security grip”, he explained, noting that the current situation is different to the situation before the January 25 Revolution when Egypt was run only through “suppressing opponents”.

“Egypt has completely lost the value of justice as nothing currently stands before the regime’s oppression. Judiciary, which is entitled to stop the police and the public prosecution’s oppression, was lost. The only way to stop oppression is the Cassation Court, which has become unreliable.”

“There is no opposition now and the regime will never allow it to exist,” noting that the parliament is similar to those during Mubarak’s era where the main role of MPs is only to say yes.
