‘Palestinians in solitary confinement live under harsh conditions’

March 21, 2016 at 10:42 am

Palestinian prisoners held in solitary confinement in Israeli jails are experiencing “very harsh” conditions, Arab48.com reported Committee of Prisoners’ Affairs lawyer Hiba Masalha saying yesterday.

Masalha visited a number of Palestinian prisoners held in solitary confinement in the Israeli prison of Majoddo. They told her that the Israeli prison service deals with them “violently” based on directions from the Israeli intelligence services.

She visited prisoner Hussam Omar, 41, who was arrested in 2002 and has been in solitary confinement for three years, Fares Al-Sada, 25, who was arrested in 2014 and has been in solitary confinement for a year and Mohamed Abu-Rabea, 40, who was arrested in 2001 and held in isolation for no reason

The lawyer said that the isolation is not the final violent manner in which Palestinian prisoners are tortured. She explained that prisoners are then banned from using proper cooking appliances, accessing newspapers or any form of communication.

The committee called on human rights organisations to follow up on the issue of Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli jails, mainly those in solitary confinemnt in the Majoddo prison, considering their suffering part of “systematic” violations which are classified as “flagrant violations” of international conventions and laws.
