Syrian opposition refuses delaying talks

March 21, 2016 at 10:35 am

The Syrian opposition said yesterday that it would not accept the postponement of the next round of peace talks, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported.

Spokesman of the High Negotiations Committee, which represents the Syrian opposition in Geneva, Salim Al-Muslit said: “We will never accept the postponement of the talks for the sake of carrying out illegal elections.”

Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad had called for talks to be delayed.

Meanwhile, Yahya Qadmani, deputy of the general coordinator of the High Negotiations Committee, said: “We send a message to Russia in order to put pressure on the Syrian regime as we are looking forward to continuing serious talks and political transition.”

Qadmani stressed that the Syrian regime has not agreed to any terms that are in line with international resolutions. He noted that the talks with the UN envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura are “constructive”.

Al-Araby Al-Jadeed has previously reported that Al-Assad called for respecting the sovereignty of the Syrian Republic, its independence and its unity. In a letter to de Mistura, he also called for the liberation of the occupied Golan Heights.

He added that Syrians alone must decide the future of their country through democratic means away from any external pressure.
