Israel happy with PA security cooperation, afraid Abbas may disappear

March 22, 2016 at 2:42 pm

Israeli officials have praised the Palestinian Authority’s security cooperation, noting that it is improving, but added that they are still afraid that PA President Mahmoud Abbas may be removed from his top position, Israeli media reported.

Arabi21 said yesterday that Israeli army radio reported senior officials saying that the PA has been exerting “significant” efforts regarding the containment of anti-Israeli attacks in the occupied West Bank, Jerusalem and within Israel.

Israel: PA cannot stop security cooperation

The PA security services, the Israeli officials said, work against Palestinians based on directions given by the Israeli intelligence services, noting they act “with an iron fist” against organised popular demonstrations near the Israeli settlements or near roads taken by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.

A former commander in the Israeli army told a local TV channel two months ago that the PA reports information about Palestinian resistance and fighters to Israel.

Meanwhile, Israel’s Channel 10 said that the Israeli political echelon is afraid of the consequences of the “sudden disappearance” of Abbas from the PA leadership pyramid.

In a report broadcast on Sunday, an Israeli security official did not rule out Abbas’s disappearance due to his health conditions or due to Israeli sanctions in case he failed to continue offering intelligence information about the Palestinian resistance to Israel.
