Lawyers union: Egyptian detainees punished with water deprivation over air ventilation protests

March 31, 2016 at 12:50 pm

The Lawyers Union for Democratic and Legal Studies has called for political prisoners in Wadi Natrun prison in northern Egypt to be saved, claiming that the prison management has punished prisoners by depriving them of water.

Shady Talaat, the union’s general director, said that following protests from the political prisoners regarding the lack of air ventilation in their cells, they were punished by being deprived of water, including drinking water.

As a result, the prisoners decided to go on strike by refusing to attend visits, Talaat added.

Talaat called the treatment of the prisoners “illegal, unconstitutional and contrary to international law”, noting that the union is seeking to file a complaint with the Egyptian interior minister and the president to stop all abuses in Wadi Natrun prison immediately.
