Fishing radius in Gaza Strip expanded to 9 miles

April 1, 2016 at 2:38 pm

Israeli authorities officially yesterday announced their decision to expand the Gaza Strip’s fishing radius to nine miles from the current six.

Yoav Mordechai, coordinator of government activities in the Palestinian Territories, said in a press release: “With the approach of the fishing season on Gaza’s coasts, which is due to begin next week, the Coordinator of Government Activities and the commander in chief of the Israeli Navy forces decided to expand the fishing radius south of Gaza Valley from six to nine miles.”

“This measure will be implemented based on the agreements that prohibit smuggling and violations of the determined naval area,” he stressed.

Nizar Ayyash, head of Gaza’s Palestinian Fishermen’s Union, announced on Wednesday that the Israeli authorities officially informed them of their decision to expand the fishing radius, noting that the decision will come into effect on 3 April.
