Egypt delegation in Italy to present evidence from Regeni's murder

April 6, 2016 at 10:23 am

An Egyptian delegation is heading to Rome today to present evidence regarding the murder of Italian research student Giulio Regeni, Egypt’s Public Prosecution revealed yesterday.

Counsellor Mustafa Suleiman, who is deputy public prosecutor, is leading the delegation, a statement said.

Regeni, 28, went missing in Cairo on 25 January, the fifth anniversary of Egypt’s 2011 revolution. Around 10 days later, his body was found in a ditch on the outskirts of Cairo.

Egyptian official sources said the delegation will present the outcome of the investigation conducted by the public prosecutor into the Italian student’s death.

The Italian news agency quoted judicial sources as saying that during the visit, Regeni’s mobile phone records will be requested to reveal more information about his last days in Cairo.

Judicial source told Quds Press that there is no news regarding those accused of killing Regeni.

Italian criticism of Egypt has mounted, and the Italian Foreign Minister said yesterday that the Egyptian delegation’s visit will be “the last chance” before Rome takes measures against Cairo.

The Italian Tourism Association said it may halt trips to Egypt, which could cost the African nation $320 million a year, according to Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics.
