UN experts raise concern over Egypt’s crackdown on human rights organisations

April 13, 2016 at 8:36 am

Three United Nations human rights experts have expressed grave concern over Egypt’s ongoing crackdown on human rights activists and civil society organisations in the country. The experts issued a joint statement on Monday on human rights violations in Egypt.

The statement deplored the closure of several civil society organisations, the arrest and interrogation of human rights defenders by the security forces, the imposition of travel bans and freezing of their accounts.

Egypt, the UN experts noted, has failed to provide a safe environment for civil society organisations, adding that the government should end all forms of injustice and to take all necessary measures to protect the organisations in question.
