The Arab Parliament has endorsed the global campaign to nominate Marwan Barghouti – a prominent Fatah leader serving five life sentences in an Israeli prison – for the Nobel Peace Prize, Azzam al-Ahmed, a member of the Arab Parliament, said in a statement Sunday.

He explained that the Arab Parliament will begin a campaign on regional and international levels to support Barghouti’s nomination, which he says will support efforts to release Palestinian prisoners.

Al-Ahmad said the parliament also supports the French initiative to convene an international peace conference in the Middle East.

The parliament has also stressed the need for the Arab League to support the Palestinian leadership’s efforts to go to the United Nations Security Council to obtain a decision on the illegality of the settlements.
