Military communication and political contact between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States has not stopped since the 1980s, a senior commander in the Revolutionary Guards has said.

Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh told reporters in the city of Qom in northern Iran that communication between Tehran and Washington in the military field has existed since the first Gulf War, Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported.

“Similar to political communication, there is a military line of communication between the Iranian armed forces and the US Department of Defence since the Iran-Iraq war,” Hajizadeh said.

The commander explained that the continuation of political communication between the two countries has helped make progress on several issues, including the nuclear deal, the lifting of sanctions and the US freezing of $2 billion in Iranian assets, pointing that a similar line of communication on the military level also exists between the two sides.
