Hamas claims Fatah planned to target Egypt’s national security

Official Hamas Spokesman Salah al-Bardaweel reportedly said that Hamas has seized a cell planning to target Egyptian officials run by members of Fatah Central Committee and Tawfiq al-Tirawi, former commander of the Palestinian Authority (PA) security services in the West Bank.

In an interview with Gaza based Palestinian newspaper Al-Resalah, Al-Bardaweel said that Hamas is due to handover documents regarding the cell, which he says planned to target Egypt’s national security, to the Egyptian authorities and other regional and international parties.

The cell also supposedly planned to broadcast threats to assassinate Egyptian officials, including Egypt’s President, and then accuse Hamas of being behind the threats.

He noted that Hamas would never allow for Al-Tirawi or anyone else to “touch” Egypt’s national security.

Al-Bardaweel also said that some of the related documents were sent to the PA President Mahmoud Abbas.

He said that investigations are still going on.
