The World Health Organisation yesterday condemned a bombing which targeted a hospital in Latakia, western of Syria, noting that 60 per cent of the hospitals operating in the country are either no longer operating or are only partially working.
An explosion targeted Jableh National Hospital on Monday killing more than 40 people and wounding 35 others. A doctor and two nurses were also killed, while 11 staff members were injured.
An official statement issued by the WHO said: “As a result of the bombing and the damage it caused, the hospital has stopped work and surviving patients were moved to nearby hospitals.”
The organisation considered that the attack was a “violation of international humanitarian law.”
“It is unacceptable to launch such attacks on health facilities, in terms of both the frequency of such attacks and the size of damage they cause.”
It urged all parties involved in the conflict to respect the safety of health professionals, demanding the warring parties abide by international humanitarian law.
