Tunisia hosts international photo exhibition on peace

May 26, 2016 at 4:26 pm

Tunisia will today host the international outdoor photo exhibition Making Peace for the first time.

The display, which runs until September, is being showcased at the Avenue Habib Bourguiba in the country’s capital, Tunis.

In remarks to the Anadolu Agency on the sidelines of a press conference to launch the exhibition, project coordinator Emteyaz Balali said this is the largest photo exhibition which focuses on peace through 112 photos taken across the world including in Tunisia from 1914-2015.

It includes photographs that document decisions in history that have enabled us to avoid conflicts and wars.

Event organisers chose this location because “in January 2011, tens of thousands of people took to Avenue Habib Bourguiba in downtown Tunis, demanding the departure of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who ruled over the country for 23 years…The revolution inspired similar uprisings across the Middle East that collectively became known as the Arab Spring.”

“In presenting Making Peace along Avenue Habib Bourguiba, we pay tribute to the courage of the Tunisian people, as well as civil society organisations … in helping to build a safer and more sustainable future for Tunisia.”

The exhibition is organised by the Swiss Embassy in Tunis, in collaboration with the Ministries of Culture and Education, the International Office of Peace, the World Organisation Against Torture and the Arab Institute of Human Rights, with the support of the Canadian and Dutch embassies.
