Forces aligned with the UN-backed interim Libyan government announced on Thursday that they retook control of a village near Sirte as part of a military campaign to retake the city from Daesh.

The Al Bunyan Al Marsoos operations room said in a statement on its official Facebook account that it had managed on Thursday to free the coastal town of Harawah, 70 kilometres east of Sirte, after expelling Daesh fighters from there.

The forces said the breakthrough came after an attack from the southern and eastern axis of the town following clashes with Daesh fighters.

“The air force has also bombed ISIS [Daesh] sites in Sirte, near Ouagadougou conference centre,” it added.
