The head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) has called on the country’s leaders to “settle their internal differences” ahead of a donors’ conference scheduled on 20 July.

Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq Jan Kubiš said during a meeting with Iraqi Planning Minister Salman Jumaili on Sunday that “an important meeting for donor countries will take place in Washington DC on 20 July under the UN auspices”.

A statement said: “The meeting will include the United States and a number of European countries, in order to secure the basic needs to reconstruct Anbar province, and the rest of the liberated areas.”

Kubiš called on all Iraqi parties to “settle their internal problems especially in Anbar province, so these problems do not affect the donor countries will to provide grants for Iraq”, according to the statement.

A member of the Iraqi Parliament Finance Committee Ahmed Sarhan said on Sunday that he expects some donor countries to be reluctant about supporting Iraq financially “due to fear of corruption”.

“The donor countries fear the grants will be lost due to financial corruption, especially in light of the difficulty to censor these grants,” Ahmed told Anadolu news agency.

Iraqi forces have managed to regain control over large areas near the city of Mosul and Salahuddin province and Anbar province after fierce battles with Daesh.
