Large numbers of Syrian refugees living in Turkey are flocking to its border with Syria in the hope of spending the Muslim celebration of Eid in their home country, the Anadolu Agency reported.

The border crossing at the Reyhanli area in the southern Turkey province of Hatay has seen large crowds of people gathering around it.

An Anadolu correspondent said the majority of Syrian refugees living in Hatay intended to cross the border to spend Eid in their own country.

Turkey’s security forces took extensive measures to control the crowds and only allowed those with ID cards across the border.

Authorities said more than 34,000 refugees have returned to Syria over the past five days, the number is expected to reach 50,000.
