Polisario Front elects new secretary-general

July 11, 2016 at 9:43 am

Western Sahara independence movement Polisario Front has elected Ibrahim Ghali as secretary-general and president of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.

Algeria’s APS news agency reported that Ghali was elected with an overwhelming majority during an extraordinary congress which concluded its proceedings on Saturday evening in Dakhla Saharawi refugee camps.

Ghali, who has previously served as defence minister and a former representative of the Polisario Front in Madrid and its ambassador in Algeria, will succeed the late Sahrawi President Mohamed Abdelaziz, who passed away on 31 May aged 69 years.

Ghali is the movement’s third secretary-general.
