Scores of Palestinians took to the streets of the Gaza Strip to show their solidarity with hunger striking prisoner Bilal Kayid who has been held in an Israeli jail for around a month, the Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.

Demonstrators walked along the main street in the centre of Gaza city raising posters reading: “No to demonstrative detention” and “Freedom for the prisoner Bilal Kayid.”

Kayid, who is affiliated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), has spent 15 years in Israeli jails, he was held under administrative detention after he completed his jail term.

PFLP member Mohamed Mikkawi told the demonstrators: “Prisoner Kayid should have been freed a month ago. He is now fighting the Israeli jailer with his empty stomach, rejecting the Israeli policy of administrative detention.”

He warned Israel against the negative effects of this detention as Kayid now suffers from a number of health problems as a result of his hunger strike.

Official statistics show that there are more than 7,000 Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli jails, including more than 400 under illegal administrative detention.
