Syria will not rejoin the Arab League

July 16, 2016 at 11:56 am

An official source within the foreign ministry in Damascus stressed on Friday that Syria “is not even thinking” about rejoining the Arab League “as long as it is dominated by certain countries conspiring against it,” the German press agency DPA has reported. According to the source, such countries are the reason for the “weakness and division” among the Arab states and make the organisation “act against its constitution.”

The ministry official added that the Arab League must carry some responsibility for the current situation in Libya and the consequences of international action against the North African state. “Furthermore, some of the dominant member states have taken doubtful positions towards Syria and towards deepening its crisis.”

The new Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Abul-Gheit, announced previously that Syria would not be able to rejoin the umbrella body without an agreement between the government of Bashar Al-Assad and the opposition.
